Beamforming to extend system range
-
Date: completed May 2024
Client: Confidential, UK
Partnerships: Cojot Antennas (Finland)

Client Challenge: Our client required reliable access to existing fixed communications infrastructure (S-Band and C-Band) in challenging urban environments.
Our Solution: We conducted extensive R&D, designing and building a prototype that incorporated a Cojot Steerable Beam Array (SBA) antenna. Our team developed software to automatically identify and track optimal beam patterns in dynamic environments.
Implementation and Trials: The prototype underwent rigorous testing in both rural and urban settings. These trials demonstrated significant advantages over existing systems, particularly in urban environments where identifying the ‘optimal’ RF path is complex. The prototype effectively discovered and utilised reflections that are typically difficult to predict or locate without prior knowledge.
Key Outcomes:
Improved Reliability: Enhanced access to fixed communications infrastructure in urban areas.
Innovative Technology: Successful integration of the Cojot SBA antenna and advanced beam-tracking software.
Proven Performance: Demonstrated superior performance in real-world trials, especially in urban environments.

Realistic RF-shielded environments
-
Date: completed June 2024
Client: Confidential, UK
Partnerships: UK-based metal fabricator, UK-based Subject Matter Expert

Client Challenge: Testing active RF capabilities in real-world scenarios is both time-consuming and logistically complex, particularly due to security and legislative restrictions. Our client sought to bring realism to RF-shielded environments to test operational capabilities and commissioned Force Effect to conduct an options study.
Our Approach: We facilitated a workshop with stakeholders to explore solutions, focusing on re-using technology from the test and measurement industry and incorporating simple analog RF solutions. Our goal was to design multi-layered solutions that could be quickly adopted across a range of projects ans use-cases, considering operational constraints such as security, size, weight, and power (SWaP).
Implementation: Our team presented a comprehensive paper outlining a range of potential “additive” options. These options could be combined to incrementally enhance realism in new or existing shielded enclosures, tailored to specific use cases.
